Laaiplek, being centrally situated, offers the perfect base to

explore the unique and stunningly beautiful West Coast of South Africa

The West Coast Way road-trips include a potpourri of exciting places to visit and experiences to lift your spirit.   It’s opt to you to explore the scenic West Coast from Flaminkevlei Waterfront as your base - or stay in our sunny village to enjoy its amazing diversity of natural beauty and many things to see and do.

See one of the richest fossil exhibits at West Coast Fossil Park

Five million years ago sabre-toothed cats roamed this land, with four-tusked elephants and strange, three-toed horses. The West Coast then looked exotically different — green and well-watered. Then the Berg Rivier came down in a mighty flood.  The flood demolished all before it and left behind only fossilized bones, washed up along the river banks.

Experience the gourmet mystery of Khoisan sea salt

Khoisan salt comes from a pristine underground seawater lake at the Velddrif Salt Works, on the shores of St. Helena Bay. The sea water filters through beds of shell giving the salt a distinct sweet salty taste and a roundness of flavor. Visit the Khoisan Salt factory shop in Velddrif and be delighted with a large variety of products.

Highlights of the West Coast National Park

  • Seeklip, a massive rock jutting from the landscape with views up to Table Mountain
  • Plankies Bay where whales visit anytime from July to October

Observation of a live beehive at Simply Bee in Hopefield

The hive has been opened on one side to observe the intricate workings of the colony from behind glass. The back is open for the bees to come and go as they please.

Fascinating look into the history of fishing on the West Coast

The exhibits in the South African Fisheries Museum celebrates local history, nostalgically interweaving fishing from the past to the present.  Exhibits include a unique collection of artifacts, photo exhibits, processing methods, models of trawlers, as well as interesting tales of the sea and the fearless seamen who sailed them.

Wine tasting and Picnicking at Org de Rac

Org de Rac Organic Wine Estate is a 100% organic wine farm.  The scenic beauty of the estate is enhanced by fields of lavender, rosemary and olive groves.  You see the estate when you cross the Berg Rivier towards Piketberg, inviting you to fine wine, good clean country air and a lust for life.

The meandering Bergrivier reflects the vibe of Laaiplek — an absolute birder and photographer's mecca.

Beautiful sandy beaches and clear blue seas, great for snorkelling or scuba diving, are found from Laaiplek all along St Helena Bay.
